Mechanical Engineering (B.S.)

Program Information

  • Students must earn an minimum overall 2.5 GPA in the Mechanical Engineering major to graduate.
  • Students who have completed 20 credits of Mechanical Engineering major courses must maintain a major GPA of 2.5. If a student’s major GPA drops below 2.5, then the student has one-semester probationary period to raise the major GPA above 2.5. If the major GPA is still below 2.5 after the probationary period, the students can retake Mechanical Engineering courses to raise the major GPA but cannot take any other Mechanical Engineering classes until they are off probation.
  • Students must attempt the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
  • Mechanical engineering graduates can apply their skills in a variety of industries such as aerospace, automotive, manufacturing and production, automation, building and construction, agriculture, and biomedical.

* Note: A portion of the B.S. requirements may be met by fulfilling the General Education  Core and Breadth Areas. Because of this, these credits are typically not counted in the degree total at the bottom of page. Some students majoring in non-science fields may need additional math/science courses to reach the minimum 12 credits. Consult your Student Success Advisor for details.

Licensure Notification


This program typically leads to licensure/certification and was designed to meet such qualifications for the state of Utah. Students who are or may be planning to pursue licensure/certification in any other U.S. state or territory may need to meet additional education requirements. This is not a reflection of SUU’s accreditation or quality, as each state and territory regulates their own education requirements for occupational licensure.

Students enrolled in a teacher preparation program may potentially be able to use a Utah educator license to obtain licensure through reciprocity. Additional information may be found through the Department of Teacher Education’s reciprocity table.

Program Educational Objectives

At SUU, the Mechanical Engineering program prepares students to succeed in industry, lead diverse teams towards a common goal, continually develop professional and technical skills, and to engage and contribute to their community and society. 

  1. Graduates of the Southern Utah University Mechanical Engineering Program are considered successful if, after four (4) years from their graduation, they
  2. Apply and communicate their engineering knowledge, critical thinking, professional skills and problem-solving abilities in professional engineering practice in a broad range of engineering fields, or in non-engineering fields;
  3. Complete advanced degrees in mechanical or other engineering disciplines if desired;
  4. Lead multidisciplinary teams on significant projects from inception to completion;
  5. Conduct interdisciplinary research;
  6. Actively participate in professional organizations and embrace leadership roles; and
  7. Apply their engineering background and develop new skills beyond engineering to contribute to their communities, society and the engineering profession.

Student Learning Outcomes

The outcomes embraced by the Mechanical Engineering program for students are those proposed by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Each graduate will take from the Mechanical Engineering program:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
