Aviation Maintenance Technician (A.A.S.)



Program Summary

The Department of Aviation Sciences at Southern Utah University offers an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT). This is an FAA-approved Part 147 aviation maintenance training associate degree program. The core curriculum is split into three sections:

  • Section 1 consists of 10 credit hours of the Aviation Generals course requirements. Generals is required to be completed prior to moving into the remaining core classes.
  • Section 2 is offered in one semester and is composed of Airframe I and Airframe II courses, which equal a total of 18 credit hours. Section 2 is comprised of full semester courses and session courses. Once all Generals and all Airframe courses are completed, students are eligible to take the FAA generals and airframe exams to receive their FAA-issued airframe license. Student will also receive the Airframe Certificate of Proficiency at the completion of sections 1 and 2.
  • Section 3 is accomplished in and consists of 15 credit hours of Powerplant I and Powerplant II course material to make up the Powerplant emphasis. At the completion of the Powerplant course material, students will be eligible to take their final FAA Powerplant exam and complete their licensing Students can choose to complete the AAS degree utilizing the Avionics emphasis in lieu of the Powerplant emphasis. The Avionics emphasis consists of two semesters and totals 25 credits.

Program Information

  • A grade of “C” or better is required for any course counted toward a major or certificate within the Department of Aviation Sciences.

Associate of Applied Science General Education Requirement (15-18 Credits)


  • One course in the English core (either ENGL 1010 , ENGL 1010E , or ENGL 2010 )
  • A minimum of one course in each of the following categories: Quantitative Literacy (Mathematics) and American Institutions
  • One course from either the Humanities or Social and Behavioral Sciences Knowledge Area (minimum of 3 credits)
  • One course from one of the remaining five Knowledge Areas (minimum of 3 credits)
