Academic English (Minor)

Program Summary

The minor in Academic English is targeted toward international English as a Second or Additional Language students who desire a credential of advanced English proficiency in academic and professional communication and culture.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to read and interpret academic texts from a variety of disciplines, noting length, complexity, and time constraints.
  • Students will be able to listen and process academic spoken discourse (such as lectures, meetings, presentations), identifying main ideas and key details.
  • Students will be able to participate orally in large and small group discussion, and they will be able to deliver oral presentations based on academic content.
  • Students will be able to write in academic genres using information from sources and from personal experience.
  • Students will demonstrate proficiency in comprehending, using, and learning general academic and discipline specific vocabulary.
  • Students will employ effective cultural and intercultural communication strategies in academic contexts.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better to be counted in the minor.
