Aviation - Certified Flight Instructor Rating (Rotor-Wing) (Certificate)

Program Summary

The Department of Aviation Sciences at Southern Utah University offers a Certificate of Completion in Fixed-Wing and Rotor-Wing platforms. Students complete 30-34 credits to complete this certificate. Students complete 9-13 credits of General Education, and 21 credits of core classes leading to the Certified Flight Instructor Rating (CFI) in either Fixed-Wing or Rotor-Wing platforms. Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate an increased recognition and respect for aviation safety between the time they join the program and the time they complete the program.
  • At conclusion of the program graduating students will demonstrate pilot skills and knowledge deemed critical by industry. Students will possess desirable attributes of professional pilots.
  • Students will show evidence that they have acquired skills or knowledge directly related to piloting aircraft within the first year of participation in the program.
  • Students will satisfy the FAA knowledge and skill requirements for Commercial Pilot Certification, Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor Instrument, and various endorsements in aircraft type and operation.

Program Information

  • Students must complete all required AVTN/PILT courses with grades of “C” or better.

General Education Requirements (9-13 Credits)


For this Certificate of Completion, 9-13 credit hours are required in the following areas:

  • One course in the Written Communication (English) core (ENGL 1010 , ENGL 1010E , or ENGL 2010 )
  • One course in the Quantitative Literacy (Mathematics) core
  • One course from the Humanities Knowledge Area (minimum of 3 credits)
