Program Summary

Alternate Route to Licensure (ARL) Pathway

Utah’s ARL program is a pathway for individuals without a background in education to become licensed Utah educators.The program is also a pathway for current Utah educators to add new areas of concentration to their existing license.

Who’s Eligible?

  • Individuals who can provide documentation of required content knowledge in a subject area taught in schools can apply for ARL (Generally, this means the applicant has a bachelor’s degree or above and coursework from an accredited university in the subject area.)
  • Individuals who are hired in a qualifying teaching position.

Required Praxis II exams for specific licensure paths:

  • Elementary Education (K-6) License Area: Test Code 5001 - ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: MULTIPLE SUBJECTS
  • Secondary Education License: VARIES ACCORDING TO ENDORSEMENT AREA
  • Special Education (K-12) License Area: Test Code 5354 - SPECIAL EDUCATION CORE KNOWLEDGE AND APPLICATIONS

  • For students completing credits in the Special Education Alternate Route to Licensure (ARL) Program, they can transfer up to 12 of those credits toward the Master of Education program.
