Social Science Composite Mission Statement

Southern Utah University offers a composite degree in Social Sciences for those who are seeking licensure in secondary education. The composite degree offers the possibility of employment in several Social Science disciplines.

Social Science Composite Curriculum Summary

Required Courses (52 credits minimum in Social Sciences):

Complete 18-credit minimum requirement in History:

HIST 1500 - World History to 1500 C.E. 3 credits
HIST 1510 - World History from 1500 C.E. to Present 3 credits
HIST 2700 - United States 1607-1877 3 credits
HIST 2710 - United States 1877-Present 3 credits
HIST 3870 - History of Utah 3 credits
HIST (upper division elective required) 3 credits

A minimum of 10 credits is required in Geography:

GEOG 1000 - Earth’s Natural Environment: Physical Geography 3 credits
GEOG 1005 - Earth’s Natural Environment: Physical Geography Lab 1 credits
GEOG 1300 - Globalization in the 21st Century: World Regional Geography 3 credits
GEOG 3600 - Geography of Utah 3 credits

A minimum of 24 credits is required from Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology or Anthropology:

ECON 2010 - Principles of Microeconomics 3 credits (prereq for ECON 3840 )
ECON 2020 - Principles of Macroeconomics 3 credits or
ECON 3840 - Public Finance 3 credits
POLS 3010 - Current Political Issues 3 credits or
POLS 3030 - State & Local Government 3 credits
POLS 3500 - Identity Politics 3 credits or
POLS 3510 - Constitutional Law 3 credits
PSY 1010 - General Psychology 3 credits (prereq for upper division PSY courses)
PSY 3220 - Adolescent Development 3 credits or
PSY 3320 - Cognitive Psychology 3 credits or
PSY 3370 - Social Psychology 3 credits
SOC 1010 - Introduction to Sociology 3 credits or
SOC 1020 - Social Problems 3 credits (prereq for upper division SOC courses)
SOC or ANTH upper division elective 3 credits
SOSC 4900 and 4980 (Utah teaching license only) 4 credits

Free Electives 21 Credits (includes completing B.A./B.S. requirement)
Free Electives may be taken (to complete BA/BS requirements, recommended free electives from the Department, etc.) as required to reach 120 total credits.
Additional credits to reach the minimum of 52 will be from electives in the social sciences subjects.

Note

Teaching License Information: SOSC 4900 , SOSC 4980 , and HIST 3870 - History of Utah are required to receive a teaching license in Utah.

No grade below a C- is acceptable toward this major.

Any SOC or ANTH upper division 3 credit course will satisfy requirement.

Professional Education Requirements for Secondary Licensure

Please see the degree requirements for Secondary Education Licensure . Some classes required for the licensure cannot be taken until the teacher candidate has been admitted to the Teacher Education Department. Please consult your advisor or the Teacher Education Department for further instruction.
