History Mission Statement

The History program is committed to preparing undergraduate students to understand their historical and cultural heritage. It supports the university’s mission by emphasizing excellence in teaching with courses grounded in the liberal arts and sciences tradition, a curriculum designed to foster knowledge of human cultures and instill intellectual and practical skills involving inquiry and analysis, critical thinking, written and oral communication, teamwork and problem solving. The History discipline supports the general education program at the university. In cooperation with the College of Education, the department prepares students for teaching careers in elementary and secondary schools, and it works to qualify majors for graduate study and advanced administrative specialization. In keeping with the university’s mission, the program emphasizes personal and social responsibility by requiring students to complete projects involving civic engagement, experiential learning, and service learning that elevate students’ civic knowledge, intercultural competence, and ethical reasoning, experiences that together provide foundations for engaged citizens and lifelong learning.

Required Courses (15 Credits):

Students must take all of the following:

HIST 1500 - World History to 1500 C.E. 3 credits
HIST 1510 - World History from 1500 C.E. to Present 3 credits
HIST 2700 - United States 1607-1877 3 credits
HIST 2710 - United States 1877-Present 3 credits
HIST 3870 - History of Utah 3 credits

Must take one of the following courses that emphasize Diversity:

HIST 3000 - American Indian History 3 credits
HIST 3620 - Afro-American History from Colonialism to 1877 3 credits
HIST 3630 - Afro-American History from 1877 to the Present 3 credits
HIST 3700 - Latin American Civilization 3 credits
HIST 3880 - History of the American Southwest 3 credits
HIST 4600 - Women in Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern Europe 3 credits
HIST 4760 - The History of Gender in America to 1865 3 credits

A student seeking a History Endorsement from the State of Utah must complete one of the following:

SOSC 4900 - Teaching Social Science Subjects 2 credits
ELED 3490 - Methods of Social Studies 3 credits

Electives (3 credits)

Sufficient courses from the department’s offerings to meet the minimum requirement. 3 credits

Note

No more than 9 credits of lower division history classes may be counted toward the credit requirement of the minor.

A history minor may emphasize either European or United States history, but must complete at least one upper division course in an area of history other than that of specialization.

Total History Credits Required (minimum): 23-24

Professional Education Requirements for Secondary Licensure

Please see the degree requirements for Secondary Education Licensure . Some classes required for the licensure cannot be taken until the teacher candidate has been admitted to the Teacher Education Department. Please consult your advisor or the Teacher Education Department for further instruction.
