Elementary Education Curriculum Requirements

Teacher candidates need to apply for admission to the College of Education during their sophomore year. Transfer students must attend one semester to establish the minimum 3.0 GPA for admittance. (See Admission Procedures)

Requirements (30-37 credits):

Courses should be taken in this order whenever possible to complete the program in a timely manner.

MATH 1050 - College Algebra 4 credits (note: credits are not double-counted if also used to satisfy GE requirement)
FLHD 1500 - Human Development Through the Lifespan 3 credits (note: credits are not double-counted if also used to satisfy GE requirement)
EDUC 3000 - Principles of Teaching & Learning 3 credits
EDUC 3200 - Educational Psychology 3 credits
ECED 3920 - Foundations in Early Childhood Education 3 credits
SPED 3030 - Educating Exceptional Students 3 credits

ECED 3950 - Integrated Curriculum & Assessment: PreK-3 3 credits
EDRG 4010 - Language Acquisition, Early Literacy & Phonics 3 credits (prerequisite: EDRG 3520)
ELED 3555 - Planning, Delivery, & Assess 3 credits
ELED 4000 - Creative Arts Integration in Elementary Ed 3 credits (prerequisite: ART/DANC/MUSC/THEA 3900)

Elementary Education Block (15 Credits)

Student must be admitted to the College of Education and Human Development Professional Teacher Education Program, taken all required elementary education courses and passed the Praxis Elementary Education Content Knowledge. Students must apply for the Block Program one semester prior to admission to Block courses.

Optional Endorsement, Concentration, and Specialization Areas

Optional: students may select an Endorsement, Concentration, or Specialization from the following:

Elementary Education Art Specialization (21 credits)
Elementary Education - Dual Immersion Endorsement (12 credits)
Elementary Education - English/Language Arts Specialization (15 credits)
Elementary Education - English as a Second Language (EESL) Specialization (18 credits)
Elementary Education K-8 Mathematics Specialization (14 credits)
Special Education Mild/Moderate Dual Licensure Concentration: K-12 (credits vary)

Open Elective Courses (10-12 Credits)

An additional 10-12 free electives are needed to satisfy the 120 credit hour requirement for graduation. It is highly recommended that students choose their electives as an endorsement, concentration, or specialization to make them more marketable.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult their advisor before making course work selections.

If a student graduates with an Elementary Education major and then returns to college to pursue an optional endorsement, concentration, or specialization, the student may not be eligible for federal financial aid.
