Program Summary

The Painting/Drawing/Printmaking Minor provides students the opportunity to explore the technical, formal, historical, and theoretical approaches to painting/drawing/printmaking through a combination of studio and art history courses. Courses provide a balance of traditional and contemporary studio techniques to engage students’ critical thinking and creative processes. The Painting/Drawing/Printmaking Minor also aims to help students understand that a practicing visual artist needs to think globally and be knowledgeable in many cultural and social discourses to be conversant in contemporary issues and critical practices.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better to be counted in the minor.
  • Transfer students must complete at least 50% of their art credits at SUU.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Demonstrate a competent level of skill in the techniques and processes used in creating drawings, paintings, and prints from rough concept to finished art in a variety of formats and media.
  • Effectively use the design elements and principles in drawing, painting, and printmaking as well as perceptively evaluate works of art.
  • Gain awareness of the history of art specifically relating to the origins of drawing, painting, and printmaking.
  • Create a body of artwork that demonstrates perceptual acuity, conceptual understanding, and technical facility.
