Program Summary

The Museum Studies minor introduces undergraduates to museums and collections’ history, theory, and practice. Courses encourage interdisciplinary thinking about the theoretical, historical, and contemporary roles of museums and curatorial institutions in society. In addition, students learn about the preservation, collection, interpretation, and exhibition of art, and anthropological, historical, and scientific materials for the public audience through the minor. Students majoring in Art, Anthropology, History, or any other major in the Humanities, Sciences, Education, or Business can enhance their area of specialization with the Museum Studies minor.

Program Information

All courses must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better to be counted in the minor.

Program Learning Outcomes

Gain an understanding of the elements, principles, and vocabulary of art/design and employ this in analysis of artwork.
Acquire working knowledge of the technologies, processes, and practices involved in exhibiting a full range of two and three-dimensional artworks and participate in the installation of exhibitions.
Develop understanding of the business aspects of museum and gallery management.
Work independently on a variety of exhibition problems by combining, as appropriate to the issue, capabilities in studio, analysis, history, and technology.
