Illustration (Minor)

Program Summary

The Illustration Minor teaches students to communicate ideas through images. Course offerings incorporate a range of curricula, including drawing, concept illustration, visual development, and narrative illustration. Students work with faculty from various areas to cultivate skills, critical thinking strategies, conceptual clarity, and originality. Studio practice is complemented by research and analysis of art and design history.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better to be counted in the minor.
  • Transfer students must earn at least 50% of their art credits from SUU.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Develop skills in the techniques, processes, and technologies used in creating illustrations from rough concept to finished art including: traditional drawing, painting, and current digital applications.
  • Effectively use the elements and principles of design to solve narrative and conceptual visual communication problems and evaluate artwork.
  • Gain understanding of the origins of illustration in art history as well as knowledge of the commercial applications in the illustration industry
  • Create illustrative artwork demonstrating perceptual acuity, conceptual understanding, and technical facility.
