Health Education (Minor)

Program Summary

Health Education is a certifiable minor approved for secondary teaching licensure at SUU. This minor is intended to provide students with the necessary academic background and preparation to effectively teach health-related courses in public and private schools.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C-” (1.7) or better to be counted in the minor.
  • HIV/AIDS Education class is needed for health teaching certification, but is only taught by the Utah State Office of Education after you have been hired to teach health.

Licensure Notification


This program typically leads to licensure/certification and was designed to meet such qualifications for the state of Utah. Students who are or may be planning to pursue licensure/certification in any other U.S. state or territory may need to meet additional education requirements. This is not a reflection of SUU’s accreditation or quality, as each state and territory regulates their own education requirements for occupational licensure.

Students enrolled in a teacher preparation program may potentially be able to use a Utah educator license to obtain licensure through reciprocity. Additional information may be found through the Department of Teacher Education’s reciprocity table.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Will be able to demonstrate an understanding of common and specialized health-related content, and scientific and theoretical foundations for the delivery.
  • Will be able to demonstrate skillful performance in physical education content areas and health-enhancing levels of fitness.
  • Will be able to apply content and foundational knowledge to plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences.
  • Will be able to engage students in meaningful learning experiences through effective use of pedagogical skills. Effective use of communication, feedback, technology, and instructional and managerial skills to enhance student learning.
  • Will be able to select and implement appropriate assessments to monitor students’ progress and guide decision-making related to instruction and learning.
  • Will be able to demonstrate behaviors essential to becoming effective professionals. Exhibition of professional ethics and culturally competent practices; seeking opportunities for continued professional development; and demonstrating knowledge of promotion/advocacy strategies for health education and overall wellness.
