Graphic Design (Minor)

Program Summary

The Graphic Design minor offers students across campus an opportunity to become fluent in the creative thinking and practice of the visual language of graphic design. The Graphic Design minor combines historical knowledge of the design discipline with contemporary problem-solving technical skills. Students gain in-depth experience using industry-standard computer software while acquiring an understanding of graphic design principles and formats. The course sequence and electives offer students a strong working foundation in graphic design and enables them to develop creative skills mastering the visual literacy underlying today’s complex forms of communication in print and the internet to complement their principle areas of study.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C” (2.0) or better to be counted in the major.
  • Transfer students must earn at least 50% of their art credits from SUU.

Program Learning Outcomes


  • Develop working knowledge of the techniques, processes, and technologies used in graphic design including: visual organization, typography, user experience design, and current digital applications.
  • Demonstrate competence in visualizing, planning and solving visual communication problems.
  • Analyze and evaluate art/design perceptively and critically using the principles of design.
  • Gain general knowledge of graphic design history.
  • Synthesize design skills, artistic knowledge, and technical skills to create a portfolio of design work.
