Program Summary

The German program at SUU trains students in communicative skills in all aspects of the German language, including reading, listening, writing, and speaking. An emphasis is also placed in the development of cultural fluency. Courses are open to all students, from beginners to intermediate and advanced learners.

Students of German at SUU benefit from a close-knit intellectual community whose bedrock is award-winning language instruction and mentoring. Classes are thought-provoking, intellectually challenging, and fun, and they are complemented by exciting co-curricular activities. With instructor guidance, German minors are encouraged to develop independent projects which build meaningful, transferable skills, such as translation. Students are advised to take advantage of study abroad programs in Germany and Austria, as well as post-graduate, career-advancing opportunities such as the German Academic Exchange Program and the Fulbright Program.

Upon the completion of a German minor, our alumni are not only able to communicate with the 120 million native speakers of German, they are able to express themselves with greater clarity and precision in their native tongue. The challenge of expressing complex ideas in German helps students develop a sense of how both English and German can be used effectively in oral and written communication. Graduates of German at SUU work in accounting, editing, filmmaking, law, marketing, medicine, politics, teaching, etc.
