Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism (Minor)



Program Summary

The minor in Outdoor Recreation in Parks and Tourism (ORPT) is offered by the Department of Kinesiology and Outdoor Recreation within the College of Health Sciences. The ORPT minor is intended to provide students with an interest in outdoor-related careers the academic and technical training needed to complement their major. The curriculum includes coursework in foundations of outdoor recreation, risk management, organization and administration, technical outdoor skills, and interdisciplinary topics. Students who minor in ORPT will have an understanding of the variety of entities providing outdoor recreation and tourism opportunities and services and the skills needed to safely and effectively work in outdoor settings. Employment opportunities typically exist with local, state, and national agencies; protected natural areas; outdoor leadership and service programs; commercial recreation enterprises; and wilderness adventure/therapy organizations.

Program Information

  • All courses must be passed with a “C-” (1.7) or better to be counted in the minor.
  • Students may gain credit through the National Outdoor Leadership School for the following courses: ORPT 1542 , ORPT 2000 , ORPT 3040 , and ORPT 4860 . Signature of ORPT coordinator required.
