French (B.A.)

Program Summary

The French B.A. is for students who want to learn French or perfect their French for academic or professional purposes. The program focuses on oral and written proficiency through a well-balanced curriculum of literature, culture, and language courses. Students learn about the French-speaking world beyond France’s borders through text, music, and film; in classes on translation, phonetics, grammar, history of the language, and others, students learn to express themselves for different contexts and in the three communicative modes as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)–that is, interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational.

Program Information

• All courses must be passed with a “C-” (1.7) or better to be counted in the major.
• The first four semesters of French or equivalent studies as approved by the department are required for all students majoring or minoring in language with an emphasis in French. Students who demonstrate advanced proficiency may receive credit by examination for some or all of the following classes: FREN 1010 , FREN 1020  or FREN 1030 , FREN 2010 , and FREN 2020  or FREN 2030 .

Program Prerequisites

All students must satisfy these requirements before achieving advanced standing. All French majors and minors have the following core courses which must be satisfied:

• FREN 1020 - Beginning French II  or FREN 1030 - Accelerated French I  4 Credit(s)
