Overview of Program
Veterinary schools do not require a specific undergraduate major; however, the Departments of Agriculture and Nutrition Science and Biology cooperate closely in offering students the appropriate combination of courses and experiences to meet admission requirements. An SUU bachelor’s degree in biology with complementary elective courses or a minor in agriculture can be earned in approximately four years and is excellent preparation for veterinary school or graduate studies in animal sciences or biology. A second option is the BS degree in agriculture and industries with an emphasis in animal science and industries and appropriate biological and physical science courses as electives.
Important Information
- Required minimum course work in the sciences, English, behavioral and social sciences, and humanities varies widely among schools of veterinary medicine. While applications can be made after approximately two (2) years of concentrated pre-veterinary coursework, veterinary schools report about four years of undergraduate study is typical of entering veterinary students.
- Above-average grades and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) are required for admission to a school of veterinary medicine. Most applicants take the examination in the spring of their third year at SUU and apply to veterinary school in the fall of their senior year.
- The School of Veterinary Medicine in Utah State University participates in the Washington-Idaho-Montana-Utah Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine. Students spend their first two years at USU’s Logan campus and the final two years at WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine in Pullman, Washington. This provides a good option for Utah residents to obtain a professional degree in veterinary medicine, all while paying in-state tuition. Since requirements and application procedures vary among veterinary schools, students should consult with the advisor before selecting courses.
Something to Consider
Many students either find themselves waiting a year for graduate/professional school acceptance, or recognize that a graduate-level credential would improve their career preparation. The MBA program in the SUU Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business welcomes applicants with undergraduate degrees in any program. There are admission requirements, but they are minimal and relatively low cost. Please contact Nathan McNamee, MBA Program Director, at (435) 865-8278, or Miranda Gubler, the Online and Graduate Coordinator for the School of Business, at (435) 586-5462.
