Overview of Department/Program

The Library Media Department at SUU offers all the coursework necessary for the Library Media minor and the Utah Library Media Endorsement (both undergraduate and graduate).

The Library Media Endorsement Program provides:

  • Completely online coursework with a focus on 21st century skills
  • Opportunities for practical experience
  • Knowledgeable and diversely experienced faculty
  • Instruction based on AASL Standards for Library Media Programs
  • Individual attention

Mission

To ensure that every student in the library media program acquires a mastery of professional competencies upon completion of degree/endorsement.

Department/Program Learning Outcomes

NCATE 2010 ALA/AASL Standards for Initial Preparation of School Librarians

Students completing the LM Endorsement Program will be able to demonstrate proficiency in each of the following standards.

  • Standard 1: Teaching for Learning: Candidates are effective teachers who demonstrate knowledge of learners and learning and who model and promote collaborative planning, instruction in multiple literacies, and inquiry-based learning, enabling members of the learning community to become effective users and creators of ideas and information. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages students’ interests and develops their ability to inquire, think critically, gain and share
  • Standard 2: Literacy and Reading: Candidates promote reading for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment. Candidates are aware of major trends in children’s and young adult literature and select reading materials in multiple formats to support reading for information, reading for pleasure, and reading for lifelong learning. Candidates use a variety of strategies to reinforce classroom reading instruction to address the diverse needs and interests of all readers.
  • Standard 3:  Information and Knowledge: Candidates model and promote ethical, equitable access to and use of physical, digital, and virtual collections of resources. Candidates demonstrate knowledge of a variety of information sources and services that support the needs of the diverse learning community. Candidates demonstrate the use of a variety of research strategies to generate knowledge to improve practice.
  • Standard 4: Advocacy and Leadership: Candidates advocate for dynamic school library programs and positive learning environments that focus on student learning and achievement by collaborating and connecting with teachers, administrators, librarians, and the community. Candidates are committed to continuous learning and professional growth and lead professional development activities for other educators. Candidates provide leadership by articulating ways in which school libraries contribute to student achievement.

Other Information

Program Requirements

To earn the Library Media Endorsement students must:

  • Successfully complete the Southern Utah University program for library media endorsement with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • Pass the required Praxis II: Subject Assessment Test #0311 within 5 years of applying to the program. Test information is available at http://www.schools.utah.gov/cert/Endorsements-ECE-License/Library-Media.aspx.
  • Create an electronic portfolio during the program.
  • Complete 100 hours of practical experience.

Admission Procedures

Admission to the library media endorsement program is a separate process and needs to be completed in addition to Southern Utah University admission.

Admission to the Master of Education Degree with School Library Media Endorsement (M.Ed.) is made through the College of Education. (http://www.suu.edu/ed/tehd/AdmissiontoTeacherEducationDept.html)

Transfer Students

  • May transfer up to six hours of library endorsement courses from other universities. For equivalent courses between universities please see the Utah State Office of Education Library Endorsement application. Coursework completed outside of Utah will need to be approved by the Library Curriculum Committee. All transfer courses must have a grade of B- or better.
  • Courses older than 5 years will not be accepted.
