Mission

The College of Engineering and Computational Sciences at Southern Utah University helps students become creative problem solvers that effectively use quantitative, digital, and mechanical tools to solve challenging real-world problems and improve people’s lives. Our faculty support students as they learn how things work, why they work, and how to make them work better. We emphasize hands-on and experiential pedagogy where students explore ideas, think critically, and develop professional skills and fluency with appropriate technologies. Our mission is to prepare students for rewarding academic and professional careers in aviation, mathematics, computing, engineering, and related fields.

College Program Goals & Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences will be able to

  1. Solve challenging technical problems through developing, adapting and applying appropriate knowledge, skills, and tools.
  2. Think critically to arrive at logical conclusions and informed decisions.
  3. Communicate effectively to a variety of audiences using written, verbal, and graphical mediums.
  4. Collaborate with others in an inclusive environment to formulate creative approaches to diverse and complex projects.

College Vision

The College of Engineering and Computational Sciences will invest strategically in our most important resources–students, faculty, and programs–in order to

  • prepare students for rewarding and fulfilling professional lives via personalized, engaging learning experiences
  • attract and retain talented faculty that are committed to innovative teaching and professional growth
  • offer meaningful and relevant courses and programs designed by experienced faculty with input from key stakeholders.

Our vision includes providing an inclusive learning environment where all students and faculty can develop and thrive.

Centers & Special Learning Environments

The College of Engineering and Computational Sciences operates, or partners with, several special programs that provide students opportunities for enrichment of their classroom learning:

  • The Thunderworks Innovation Center is a regional center of innovative thought and practice which encourages collaboration between academia, industry, and community. The Thunderworks Makerspace provides a dedicated space with a wide range of tools where students, faculty, and community members can engage in collaborative, creative, hands-on learning experiences.
  • The SUU STEM Center brings together people and resources to facilitate cutting-edge STEM Initiatives that enhance teaching and learning in the preK-16 environment. With three strategic areas of influence–professional development, student engagement, and college and career readiness–the center works in a six-county area of southwestern Utah. Projects are facilitated by a dedicated cadre of SUU faculty and student volunteers.
  • SUU is the program delivery organization for FIRST Tech Challenge Utah, where teams of students ages 12-18 learn to think like engineers and computer programmers. Teams design, build, and program robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams from across Utah.
