Program Summary
The Department of Aviation Sciences at Southern Utah University offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT). This is an FAA-approved Part 147 aviation maintenance training associate degree program. The core curriculum is split into three sections:
- Section 1 is offered in one semester and is composed of all the AMT generals courses, which equal a total of 10 credit hours. Generals is required to be completed prior to moving into the remaining core classes. AMTA 1100 does not require completion of Generals.
- Section 2 is offered in two semesters and is composed of Airframe I and Airframe II courses, which equal a total of 22 credit hours. Section 2 is comprised of full semester courses and session courses. Once all Generals and all Airframe courses are completed, students are eligible to take the FAA generals and airframe Oral and Practical exams (commonly referred to as O&Ps) to receive their FAA-issued aircraft mechanic certificate with an airframe rating. Students will also receive the AMT Airframe (Certificate) at the completion of sections 1 and 2.
- Section 3 is offered in two semesters and is composed of Powerplant I and Powerplant II courses, which equal a total of 15 credit hours. Section 3 is comprised of full semester courses and session courses. Modalities include online and in-person courses. At the completion of the Powerplant course material, students will be eligible to take the final FAA Powerplant O&P exam and add their Powerplant rating. Students will also receive the AMT Powerplant (Certificate) at the completion of section 3.

- A grade of C (2.0) or better is required for any course counted toward a major or certificate within the Department of Aviation Sciences.

Associate of Applied Science General Education Requirement (9+ Credits)
For an Associate of Applied Science degree, a minimum of 9 credit hours are required in the following areas: - One course in the English Core (3+ Credits)
- One course in the Quantitative Literacy (Mathematics) Core (3+ Credits)
- One course in American Institutions (3 Credits)

Complete a minimum of 7 credits from the following: Free Electives and University Requirements (Associate)
Students’ total free elective credit is determined by their General Education courses taken, degree type selected (if applicable), additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. Some students and/or programs may not have any free electives. For an associate’s degree, students must earn - A minimum of 60 total credits;
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in both SUU coursework and combined transfer/SUU coursework; and
- 24 credits completed through SUU.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the degree, the Aviation Maintenance program will provide students with the educational foundation and applied learning experiences necessary to: - Achieve Technical Competence - Attain theoretical knowledge and practical proficiency, consistent with FAA Mechanic Airmen Certification Standards (ACS) standards, in the inspection, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of aircraft airframe and powerplant systems.
- Qualify for National Certification - Complete the academic coursework and laboratory exercises necessary to qualify for the examinations required to receive the FAA Certified Aircraft Mechanic certification with the Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) ratings, or an equivalent national credential.
- Apply Safety and Regulatory Knowledge - Demonstrate the ability to interpret, apply, and comply with FAA regulations, manufacturer specifications, and airworthiness requirements.
- Exhibit Leadership Conduct - Demonstrate personal integrity, accountability, and foundational leadership behaviors that positively influence the aviation maintenance industry such as responsibility, ethical decision-making, and teamwork.
- Communicate Effectively - Use appropriate technical vocabulary, written documentation, and oral communication skills in maintenance environments and regulatory contexts.
- Commit to Lifelong Excellence in Aviation - Maintain a sustained commitment to aviation excellence through continued professional learning, skill enhancement, and adaptation to evolving aviation technologies, regulations, and industry practices.
- Promote Aviation Safety Culture - Apply principles of human factors, risk management, and safety management systems (SMS) to contribute to a culture of safety in aviation maintenance operations.
