Civil Engineering - Construction Engineering Emphasis (B.S.)

Program Information
- Students must earn a minimum overall 2.5 GPA in Civil Engineering major courses to graduate.
- Students who have completed 20 credits of Civil Engineering major courses must maintain a major GPA of 2.5. If a student’s major GPA drops below 2.5, then the student has a one-semester probationary period to raise the major GPA above 2.5. If the major GPA is still below 2.5 after the probationary period, the students can retake Civil Engineering courses to raise the major GPA but cannot take any other Civil Engineering classes until they are off probation.
- Students must attempt the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

* Note: A portion of the B.S. requirements may be met by fulfilling the General Education Core and Breadth Areas. Because of this, these credits are typically not counted in the degree total at the bottom of page. Total elective credit is determined by General Education courses taken, degree type selected, additional credits earned, and any additional math or other prerequisite courses needed. For a bachelor’s degree, students must earn a minimum of 40 upper-division credits (courses numbered 3000-4999). Students may need to select additional upper-division courses not included in their major requirements in order to reach this minimum. Please consult your Student Success Advisor for details. Licensure Notification
This program typically leads to licensure/certification and was designed to meet such qualifications for the state of Utah. Students who are or may be planning to pursue licensure/certification in any other U.S. state or territory may need to meet additional education requirements. This is not a reflection of SUU’s accreditation or quality, as each state and territory regulates their own education requirements for occupational licensure. Students enrolled in a teacher preparation program may potentially be able to use a Utah educator license to obtain licensure through reciprocity. Additional information may be found through the Department of Teacher Education’s reciprocity table. Program Educational Objectives Graduates of the Southern Utah University Civil Engineering Program are considered successful if, after four (4) years from their graduation, they - Are prepared to attain professional engineering licensure.
- Are effective leaders in public and private organizations in civil engineering fields.
- Have innovative competencies for professional practice to perform multidisciplinary and cross-civil engineering applications.
- Design, build, maintain, or improve safe, economical and reliable structures considering the codes and standards, as well the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts as needed.
- Are prepared to engage in or have completed a graduate-level degree.
- Have the skills required to identify, analyze, and manage complex civil engineering problems.
Student Learning Outcomes The student learning outcomes embraced by the Civil Engineering program are those proposed by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Each graduate will take from the Civil Engineering program: - An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
- An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
- An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
- An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
- An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
- An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
- An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
