Spanish Degree Requirements

The first four semesters of Spanish or equivalent studies as approved by the department are required for all students majoring or minoring in language with an emphasis in Spanish. Students with previous language experience, upon demonstration of advanced proficiency, may receive credit by examination for part or all of the following classes: SPAN 1010 , SPAN 1020  or SPAN 1030 , SPAN 2010 , SPAN 2020 .

Transfer Credits

The Spanish program will accept no more than nine upper division Spanish credits taken at another institution or on study abroad toward the major. Transfer credits not covered by articulation must be approved by the Department Chair.

General Education Requirement (32-36 Credits)

Experiential Education University Requirement - EDGE Program (3 Credits)


NOTE: As of 7/12/2019, students pursuing this bachelor’s degree are no longer required to complete the EDGE courses for graduation.

BA Degree – Foreign Language Requirement (16 credits or proficiency test)


All students before achieving advanced standing must satisfy these requirements. All Spanish majors and minors have the following core courses which must be satisfied.

Required Courses (26 Credits)


Spanish Electives (6 Credits)


6 additional credits which may include any course at or beyond the 3000 level. SPAN 4610  (as long as they are different titles) may be taken for credit more than once. SPAN 4900  counts as an elective toward a Spanish major for non-Secondary Education majors.

Other Electives


  • Free Electives as approved by the Advisor may be taken to complete BA degree requirements to reach 120 total credits.

Total Credits, B.A. degree: 120-122


Note


Students with extensive foreign residency experience in Spanish-speaking areas are advised not to enroll in SPAN 1010 , SPAN 1020  or SPAN 1030 , SPAN 2010 SPAN 2020 . Such students may earn P/F credits for those courses through examination as indicated above.

Students may only count one course in which English is the language of instruction toward the Spanish B.A. (e.g. LANG 3030 , SPAN 3250 SPAN 4900 

No course in which a grade lower than a “C-” is received may be counted toward the credit hour requirement for any major or minor emphasis in the department. Those working toward the major may also select an appropriate minor.

Any internship (SPAN 4893 ), study abroad (SPAN 4920 ), and student teaching (SPAN 4980 ) credit counts as an elective. Other than transfer credit, internship and study abroad credits should not exceed 3 credits per denomination. SPAN 4980  should not exceed 2 credits. Total credit toward a Spanish Major with a SPAN 4893 , SPAN 4920 , and SPAN 4980  denomination must not exceed a maximum of 6 credits. 

Independent study courses are reserved for situations of extreme necessity. Trying to get a major in a period of a year and a half or less does not fit such description, and it should be avoided through careful planning. Under no circumstances will more than two independent studies be allowed towards a major.
