Overview of Program

The Master of Science in Sports Conditioning and Performance degree is an innovative approach to meet the needs of coaches, physical educators, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other fitness professionals. This degree is consistent with SUU’s long tradition as the “Coaching Factory.” This degree offers extensive online coursework in sports conditioning, enabling professionals to design safe and effective exercise and conditioning programs. Three (3) intensive summer courses will require students to attend clinical workshops on campus at SUU for two (2) weeks.

Students applying for this degree program will be selected based on the applicant’s prior experience, academic success, letters of recommendation, personal motivation, and graduate admission examinations (Graduate Record Exam or Millers Analogies). Once admitted, candidates have six (6) years to complete the degree.

Mission

The mission of the MSSCP program is to provide graduate students with educational knowledge and skills to enhance the practical application of strength and conditioning.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students in the MSSCP program should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a command of content knowledge commensurate with a professional holding a master’s degree.
2. Apply their content knowledge and skills to think critically and ethically in examining issues and solving problems associated with the discipline.
3. Interpret, evaluate, synthesize, and apply the professional literature of the discipline.
4. Effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, in academic and professional settings.
5. Demonstrate behaviors that are consistent with professional ethical standards.

Admission and Graduation Information

Requirements for Admission to the MSSCP Program

Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

1. Have a baccalaureate degree with a major or minor in physical education, exercise science, or sports medicine;
2. Have a baccalaureate degree and be a licensed or certified fitness professional (CSCS, NSCA-CPT, ACSM-CPT, ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor–must provide copy of certification); or
3. Have a baccalaureate degree and have completed undergraduate courses in exercise physiology and biomechanics. 

Candidates are expected to be computer literate, experienced in word processing, and have access to a high-speed Internet connection.

Prospective students must also have achieved a 3.0 GPA on the last 60 hours of their baccalaureate degree.

Application Process

Applicants are required to complete the following items:

1. Complete SUU Graduate Studies Application, including:
   • $60.00 nonrefundable application processing fee.
   • Verification of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with official transcripts.
   • Three (3) recommendation forms accessed through the online graduate school application process (excluding recommendations from SUU KOR professors).
   • Graduate exam scores (GRE or Miller’s Analogies).
2. Minimum graduate entrance exam scores must meet the following*: Miller’s Analogies (40th percentile or greater) or GRE (152 Verbal, 152 Quantitative, 4.0 Analytical Writing). (*Students that have a 3.25 or higher GPA for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate work are exempt from taking graduate exams. Transfer graduate students with a GPA greater than or equal to 3.00 for the last 9 semester hours are also exempt from taking graduate entrance exams.)
3. Letter of application expressing career goals and expectations of success in this program. (Submit letter as an email attachment to gradapps@suu.edu and copy anderson_j@suu.edu.)

A $15.00 readmission fee will apply if one (1) year has elapsed since last class registration. New letters of recommendation and graduate entrance exam(s) are not required.

Conditional Admission

Applicants who do not meet minimum requirements may be admitted for up to one (1) year on a conditional basis. The KOR Department will either admit or drop the student from degree-seeking status at the end of the one-year probation.

Transfer Credit

Students may transfer up to 12 semester credit hours if they align with current course content.

Graduation Requirements

Candidates have six (6) years to complete the degree. All courses must be completed with a “C” grade or better.
