SPAN 4318 - Soccer and Society in Latin America

3 Credit(s)

This course provides students with the opportunity to examine the complexity of Latin American societies through the study of one of the world’s most popular sports-as well as one of the most intense and significant cultural and mass phenomena of our times: soccer. Starting with the Latin American countries with the longest soccer traditions, we will ask ourselves what soccer can teach us about the region and to what extent it is possible to understand one without the other. On this intricate and fascinating journey, we will explore the intersection between soccer and other interdisciplinary subjects, such as history, sociology, anthropology, music, literature, politics, economics, journalism, gender, cultural studies, and religion. (Fall [As Needed], Spring [As Needed], Summer [As Needed]) [Graded (Standard Letter)]
