AA 6010 - Principles of Arts Administration

This course is an overview of nonprofit arts administration, including basic principles of nonprofit organizations, organizations hierarchy, basic human resources management, overview of the budgeting process (and role of board and staff in developing and approving budgets), and basic strategic planning. Students will also examine the arts as an industry, and gain an understanding of how organizational structures vary according to artistic discipline (opera, theatre, dance, and gallery) and the difference between presenting and producing organizations. A portion of the course will look at the for-profit arts world (film industry, Broadway, commercial galleries) as well as other competitors to nonprofit arts, and examine similarities and differences between them.
